Radio Distortion Bulletin #30

Tired of Big Radio’s static? Tune into the truth…
So NAB has conducted a poll that claims to show that a majority of Americans “do not support a performance fee levied on radio stations.” http://www.nab.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Press_Releases1&CONTENTID=150...
In fact, two years ago, musicFIRST commissioned its own study, conducted by the respected firm Public Opinion Strategies (unlike NAB, however, it was not conducted out of political expediency and we are willing to share the survey questions with the public). Two key questions asked whether respondents thought artists and musicians already receive compensation when an AM or FM radio station plays their song (67 percent incorrectly thought they WERE compensated already, 33 percent said no), and whether artists and musicians should be compensated when their song is played by an AM or FM radio station (60 percent said they should, 34 percent said they shouldn’t).
THE FACTS: Still skeptical? Do your own study. Ask people on the street, or friends new to the issue, “Do artists get paid by broadcasters when their music is played on radio?” Undoubtedly, the vast majority will say yes. Why? Because it’s common sense – everyone should get paid for use of their work. And because it’s the right thing to do.
