Radio Distortion Bulletin #29

23 October 2009

Tired of Big Radio’s static? Tune into the truth…

“The record companies want the change because they're ‘running out of money,’ National Association of Broadcasters board Chairman Steve Newberry says. ‘When you start with that basis, it's very difficult to engage in good-faith negotiations.’” http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/2009-10-20-radio-music-royalties-con...

THE FACTS: Let’s get this straight:

Artists and music companies have been fighting for a performance right in broadcast radio for more than 80 years. Artists and music companies have sat by helplessly for generations – even in profitable years – as broadcasters use their political muscle to thwart any attempts to recognize a performance right. NAB’s former CEO said he would rather “slit his throat” than negotiate. Still, artists and music companies have, unilaterally and without broadcaster input, agreed to enormous accommodations in the PRA for broadcasters. Yet, somehow, it’s “difficult to engage in good-faith negotiations” with us???

Seriously – it’s time for Big Radio to stop making excuses and negotiate a fair performance right. It’s never the wrong time to do the right thing.
